Q: What makes a good student?
A: Dedication, determination, commitment, ability
AND THE ABSENCE OF AN EGO.
Some people are born with it,, VAST MAJORITY are
not. We get students all the time that want to learn to
fight but they won’t or they cant for many reasons.
Learning to fight and fight hard takes a strong person,
not just strength strong, but strong in will too..
Learning to fight is not simple and you can not learn it
in a few weeks. It takes a commitment and a will to
change normal routines so a student can have the time
to train and time to recover.
It also takes a person who has the ability to train.
Sorry, but being grossly out of shape or having
numerous health issues like smoking, arthritis, bad
neck/hips, knees, back, etc. are going to limit what you
can and cannot do and if I feel that it is a safety issue, I
will ask you to stop training so no one gets hurt.
Some great qualifications that helps to make a great
student are:
- Being on time and training often.
- Asking Questions and taking notes.
- Being focused while training.
- Having no ego and being humble while training.
- Practice at home, both physically and mentally.
Being on time and training often. Remember, it takes
a commitment which may include changing or altering
other activities. In class, other students are often
having to wait until someone else shows up so they can
have a training partner, which is often better than
sharing one.
Asking Questions and taking notes. This one surprise
me,, Many gyms do not allow students to stop the
class an ask questions, nor do they allow students to
temporarily stop training so they can write down
notes. If you belong to one of these gyms I highly
encourage you to find a new place to train. Here, I
STRONGLY ENCOURAGE ASKING QUESTIONS,
TAKING NOTES AND EVEN TAKING QUICK
VIDEOS. If a student is training but isn’t quite getting
the understanding of what to do,, how are they going
to learn? And having a bunch of notes or even quick
video’s allow students to go back home and practice
more effectively because they have something that can
an will remind them what to do as well as what not to
do. Note taking is a fantastic learning tool.
Being focused while training. When a student comes
to the gym to train, their focus must be on training, not
family, not of friends and certainly not about work or
the weekend that’s coming up. Ok, great,, you have a
vacation coming up or you are pissed off because of
work or someone you know. Put your phone on silent
and put it all on pause for 2.5 hours and train. Your
problems will still be there after class.
Having no ego and being humble while training.
Students need to come to class with the intention of
learning, training hard and HELPING OTHERS
LEARN AND TRAIN HARD TOO. Many times
students come in and they act like they have something
to prove like they are bigger and stronger than there
training partner. Great,, maybe you are, maybe you
are not! This is the biggest reason I see in class why
students don’t learn. They go too hard too fast and
forget what is being taught. Slow with intent is the way
to learn. Hard and fast is for the streets. In class, take
it slow and learn, and that means to slow down and
help your training partner too. A student has two
jobs. First job is to learn,, Second job is help their
training partner learn. No one can learn when they are
hurt.
Practice at home, both physically and mentally.
Learning anything takes time and it requires the
student to practice as often as possible. Even when
you are not at the gym, you can help yourself by eating
better, exercising mentally practice techniques and
mentally prepare yourself for the next actual training
session. Mentally rehearse what you would do if
someone was to break through your bathroom door
with a steak knife, or what you would do if you turn the
corner at walmarts and someone lunged at you with a
screw driver. it is better to have some options mentally
rehearsed and practiced so you have some type of
reaction should something happen, then to hesitate
and take no action because you don’t know how to
react.
Why good students are hard to find?
1: Unwilling to find time
2: They don’t want to get physical or make contact
with other people.
3: Most of todays society are wimps and cowards,
sorry but true.
4: Lack of finances
5: Full of excuses
1: Majority of people want to train but are unwilling to
make time to train by saying no to friends and
colleagues. Remember, it takes a commitment to
priorities. If you want to learn to fight, you have to
devote time to learning to fight.
2: Majority of people do not actually want to get
physical (close proximity) with another person
who may be sweating and/or smells (this is especially
seen in women). If you can’t train under these
conditions, how can you fight there.
3: Vast majority of people today are cowards and
wimps.(sorry to be blunt, but it’s true.) They do not
like it when they get hit, bruised or hurt. Hell, a lot of
people don’t even like it when they sweat or get
exhausted. They do not want to actually spar with a
real person and would rather simply hit a punching
bag instead.
Taking bumps and bruises is part of training, just like
basketball, hockey or any sport. Experiencing and
dealing with pain also helps you deal with it more
effectively if you ever do get attacked and injured. You
will already know what it is and how to deal with it.
We try very hard not have anyone get hurt, but
accidents do happen. Punching bags is great for
endurance and conditioning, but punching bags don’t
move and they don’t think or hit back. You have to
have some heavy sparring if you every actually want to
learn and get proficient.
4: Some people can’t afford it. This I can understand,
however, if you really want to do something you will
find a way to do it. If the person is serious enough,
they will find a way to do it.
5: TOO MANY EXCUSES; Roads, weather, tired, had
to walk the dogs, too far to drive, no clean
cloths, had to watch the game, ETC,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Again, if you are serious about learning to fight so you
can protect yourself and your family, you are going to
have to make some changes to your regular daily
routine
